For the first time as a collective team, TrekIT Health traveled to the largest annual gathering of health information and technology professionals, clinicians, and executives in the world.
HIMSS 2019 gave us the opportunity to showcase the progress we have been able to make with our proprietary software platform being used to better connect clinicians to their peers and patients.
From February 11-15, 2019, we worked the trade show floor at Orange County Convention Center and the mean streets of Orlando, Florida to market our product (hey, whatever it takes).
We took our message to the masses, engaging face-to-face with key healthcare leaders, prospective clients and the media, by leading two thought-provoking discussions.
On Feb. 13, TrekIT Co-founder, Subha Airan-Javia, MD, presented on the value of technology development and its impact on reducing administrative tasks and inefficiencies. The talk, If You Build It, Build It Well: User-Centered Design and Agile Development Provides User Delight, drew on Dr. Airan-Javia’s experience building a clinician focused tool. . It encapsulated the direction she took to design, build, and iterate an application to improve clinical workflows.
The next day, she teamed up with Neha Patel, MD, associate chief medical informatics officer, her colleague at Penn, to discuss the execution of two projects Dr. Airan-Javia and Dr. Patel spearheaded while at Penn.. The Valentine’s Day presentation, titled To Buy or to Build: How to Get Your Project off the Ground, was well-attended by a mix of technologists and clinical professionals trying to find their match. The duo highlighted their strategies when building a custom software internally vs. buying an established commercial product, and how they overcame resistance from stakeholders during development. They took stock of everyone’s opinion and succeeded, leading to widespread technology adoption and a better end user experience. The results were achieved by including clinical professionals’ feedback in the process and getting their “buy-in”.
If there’s one thing we learned while on the road, it’s that the industry is much more open-minded to implementing new technology solutions than in years’ past. In order to remain competitive in the market, and to deliver better overall care to patients, providers need to partner with technology vendors on next generation tools. These products must also be properly vetted by end users on a care team, giving those clinicians a voice in the development process. Data and the ability to assess, in real-time, a patient’s health “portrait” (medication dosage, vitals, specialist’s reports), dominated our conversations at HIMSS.
We’re committed to ensuring we put this knowledge to good use, and are already engaged with many leading practices and prospective clients who are equally motivated to “disrupt” the status quo.
